How to improve in Key Stage 3 PE

Help for students and parents

We encourage all our students to reflect on their learning in lessons and use feedback from their teachers to help them improve. Below, you will find the ‘statements for improvement’ that summarise the feedback students are given.

These statements are used on termly reports sent to parents. Students and parents are asked to look at the further guidance below to help clarify the statements on the reports.

In Key Stage 3 students study a range of sports. These include games activities such as Netball, Hockey, Football, Rugby, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket, Tennis, Badminton, aesthetic activities such as Gymnastics and Dance, and also Health Related Fitness and Athletics.  In this Key Stage students are encouraged to take an active role, which could be performing, officiating, evaluating or leading.

  1. Improve the speed of your decision making whilst under pressure in a competitive situation

Practice your decision-making by gradually increasing the demands of the activity, for example practice a basketball skill with 2 defenders, then 3 and so on 

  1. Aim to try a variety of positions in a range of activities to develop a greater game understanding

Practice being a defender, midfielder and attacker in some of the games’ activities you are doing on PE

  1. Develop more quality and detail when evaluating your own and others’ performance

When feeding back use technical language or specific descriptions, for example, body tension, stand sideways on. Try not to use general phrases like ‘that was good’ or ‘used space well’.

  1. Perform with more fluency and control to increase the precision of your movements

Practice making the end of one movement move smoothly into the next. For example, handstand into forward roll, or a dodge following smoothly by a pass in hockey.

  1. Apply a variety of skills consistently when you are in a competitive/formal situation

Use small-sided games or conditioned practices to develop skills. Practice using different ways to perform a skill, for example, 3 different ways to dodge in netball.  

  1. Use a variety of skills/tactics to outwit an opponent, and modify your ideas to improve success

Use different game/sport related scenarios to develop skills. Practice using different ways to perform a skill, for example, 3 different ways to dodge in netball.  Work out which ones are the most successful for you.    

  1. Improve your planning of skills and tactics to make your performances more effective 
  2. Develop your leadership skills to create an improvement in performance

Take a more active role in lessons to organise yourself and other groups. For example, leading a warm up for 3 friends. 

  1. Use your body tension effectively at all times when performing

If you find body tension difficult, you could improve your muscular strength and endurance. For example, research some suitable exercises and practice these at home. 

  1. Improve your footwork and positioning to make the skill easier

If you find footwork difficult, you could improve your speed and agility. For example, research some suitable exercises and practice these at home. 

  1. Warm up independently for different activities

Make sure that you know what a good warm up should include; a pulse raiser, stretching and skill specific activity. For example, a 5 minute jog, 6 arm and leg stretches and a passing drill.

  1. Persevere with difficult tasks even when immediate success is not achieved

‘Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding on the 20th’ . Try not to worry when you cannot do a skill first time. Remember it takes 10,000 hours of practice to get really good at just one skill!

  1. Bring correct and appropriate kit for all activities

Try to use strategies to be more organised. These could include:

  • Checking your planner regularly
  • Packing your bag the night before
  • Naming your PE kit
  • Putting your whole PE kit back in your bag at the end of the lesson
  • Keeping your PE bag in your locker 
  1. Improve your physical fitness by increasing your activity levels

NHS guidelines state that the minimum level pupils should be able to achieve should be:

Yr7 run continuously for 12mins

Yr8 run continuously for 15mins

Yr9 run continuously for 20mins

Yr10 upwards run continuously for 25mins

  1. Develop your knowledge and application of rules

If you do not know the rules of an activity, you could improve your knowledge by playing and watching more sport, joining a sports club in or out of school, speaking to umpires and referees from different games. You could also practice being an umpire or referee in your PE lessons, or at a sports club in or out of school.
