In the Event of

unplanned school closure!

(including Snow!)

December 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There are times when I might need to close the school as a result of an unforeseen incident. This document informs you of our procedures relating to any closures.

The most common reason to close the school will be due to snow or extreme weather. Over previous winters we have had to make this decision.

In making a decision to close the school, there are a number of issues that I have to consider:

  • Many students, especially those who live in the villages, are reliant on school buses.  We need to be sure that the buses will run and that journeys are safe.
  • Most of our staff live some way from school, some a considerable distance from Baldock.  We have to be confident that there will be sufficient staff able to get here in order to teach the pupils.  I have to ensure a safe level of supervision.
  • The condition of the site – is it safe for pupils to move around the school?

I assure you that this is not a decision that I make lightly.  Parents will appreciate the dilemma at 6.30 a.m. between giving everyone sufficient notice of closure and trying to guess what road and weather conditions will be between 8.00 a.m. and 8.30 a.m.  The highways department are adamant that they will not treat approach roads to the school, we are not their priority.

If at all possible a decision will be taken before 7.00 a.m and communicated to parents by text message via the InTouch system. The decision will be posted on the school’s website and answerphone and those messages will be updated regularly.

No closure message means that we intend to open

We will also inform local radio stations - Heart 96.9 Home Counties and BBC Three Counties Radio 103.8FM and 630MW and the Hertfordshire County Council website

When the school is closed then work for pupils is available on Show My Homework and RealSmart.

Yours sincerely

T Litchfield

In addition to the above you may wish to register for the Herts County Council website as follows:

To register, follow this link:

This will direct you to the “Sign Up” page where you should click on the “sign up” button located at the top right hand side of the page on the grey strip and from there follow the instructions. It should take no more than 5 minutes to register and you can edit their information at any time should they change your mobile number or email address, although please remember to advise school separately as we are not linked to the HCC system.

Each contact within the system can have 2 devices added for each communication type if they wish to – this means that in addition to adding your own mobile number and email address, you could include the mobile number and email address of a partner or a grandparent in the registration process. They too would then receive any messages in relation to the school’s closure. Alternatively, interested parties could register themselves separately.

If you have children at more than one school you can register for those schools too in a single registration process by selecting all schools you have children at.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU DO NOT CLICK IN THE “ALL SCHOOLS TICK BOX” – If you do this, you will sign up to receive messages from every school in Hertfordshire.  You need to click on the blue cross which will expand the link, select your area and then select The Knights Templar School.

Once signed up you will receive messages relating to the status of each school as appropriate in addition to the message direct from Knights Templar.
