Unplanned Closure

Why might the school have an unplanned closure?

There are times when it is necessary to close the school as a result of an unforeseen incident.  The most common reason to close the school will be due to snow or extreme weather. Over previous winters we have had to make this decision.

Where will students find work to complete when school is closed?

When the school is closed work for students is available on Satchel One.

What does the headteacher have to consider when making a decision about closure?

  • Many students, especially those who live in the villages, are reliant on school buses.  We need to be sure that the buses will run and that journeys are safe.
  • Most of our staff live some way from school, some a considerable distance from Baldock.  We have to be confident that there will be sufficient staff able to get here in order to teach the students and to ensure a safe level of supervision.

  • The condition of the site – is it safe for students to move around the school?

This is not a decision that is made lightly.  Parents and carers will appreciate the dilemma at 6.30 a.m. between giving everyone sufficient notice of closure and trying to guess what road and weather conditions will be between 8.00 a.m. and 8.30 a.m.  The highways department are adamant that they will not treat approach roads to the school - we are not their priority.

When will the decision to close be taken?

If at all possible a decision will be taken before 7.00 a.m

How can I find out if school is closed?

No closure message means that we intend to open.

An unplanned closure will be communicated to parents and carers by text message. The decision will also be posted on the school’s website and answerphone and those messages will be updated regularly.

We will also inform local radio stations - Heart 96.9 Home Counties and BBC Three Counties Radio 103.8FM and 630MW.

Additionally,  you can check the Hertfordshire County Council website or you can register for their alert service.
